Quick Answer: Nine UK market research companies worth shortlisting for a consumer brand are Alchemic, Attest, Brandspeak, Kantar, MMR Research, Savanta, Vision One, Walnut Unlimited and YouGov. They sort into full-service agencies, panel and data companies, and platforms, so pick the tier before the name. MRS counts more than 4,000 UK research enterprises.
The UK research market has a small head and a very long tail. The Market Research Society estimates the UK research, insight and analytics industry approaches £10 billion, across at least 4,000 enterprises, and nearly three quarters of the companies under the two research-specific industry codes have four or fewer workers.
Tier matters more than name because each tier answers a different question well. A panel company tells you what a nationally representative sample thinks by tomorrow. A full-service agency tells you why, and what to do about it. A platform puts both in your team's hands, with or without researchers behind it.
Key takeaways
- Choose the tier first: full-service agency, panel and data company, or platform. Names come second.
- MRS accreditation binds a supplier and the people it retains to the MRS Code of Conduct. Ask for it.
- Online panels miss a real group: Ofcom finds 6% of UK adults have no home internet, two thirds of them aged 75 or over.
- WhatsApp reaches 90% of UK online adults, which makes it a fieldwork channel, not just a messaging app.
- Published UK prices exist. One London agency quotes £5,000 to £30,000 or more for good-quality research.
Nine UK Research Companies Compared by Tier and Channel
Rows are alphabetical by company name, so the order carries no ranking. Every cell comes from the company's own website, read on 23 September 2026, and scale figures are each company's own claim.
| Company | Tier | What a consumer brand buys | Channels and methods | Published scale | Service model |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Alchemic | Platform with a research team | Qual and quant in one interview: concept, ad, packaging, brand tracks | Web link, WhatsApp-native, AI phone | 14 markets including the USA and the UK | Managed fieldwork or bring your own; self-serve too |
| Attest | Platform | Surveys plus AI-moderated interviews | Online | 150M+ consumers, 59 markets | Self-serve, research team on hand |
| Brandspeak | Full-service agency | Brand development, tracking, NPD, packaging | Qual, quant, ethnography | Over 20 years | Director-level consultant per project |
| Kantar | Full-service group | Brand equity, creative testing, agile research | Full range plus Kantar Marketplace | Equity study of 4.3 million consumers, 54 markets | Full service and platform |
| MMR Research | Specialist agency | Product, pack, concept, sensory | Sensory science plus consumer research | Over 30 years | Full service |
| Savanta | Agency and data | Brand tracking, consumer and grocery reads | Full fieldwork and analysis | Quarterly UK Grocery Eye since 2014 | Full service plus data products |
| Vision One | Full-service agency | U&A, segmentation, concept, pack, pricing | Qual, CATI, CAPI, online, hall tests, eye tracking | ISO 20252 accredited | Full service, published price guide |
| Walnut Unlimited | Specialist agency | Behavioral science, neuro, brand | Qual, quant, consumer neuroscience | Not published | Full service |
| YouGov | Panel and data | Daily brand tracking, profiles, fast surveys | Online panel, AI interviews | 30M+ member panel | Self-serve and bespoke |
No row wins every column. Panel houses win on speed and volume, specialists on depth in one discipline, and the big groups on benchmarks nobody else holds. For the managed version of a UK consumer study with reach beyond the browser, see how end-to-end consumer research at scale is scoped.
The UK Research Landscape in Three Tiers
- Full-service agencies. You bring a business question; they design, recruit, field, analyze and recommend. Vision One, Brandspeak, Savanta, Kantar, MMR Research and Walnut Unlimited sit here, from generalist to deep specialist.
- Panel and data companies. They sell access to people who already agreed to answer, or data those people already produced. YouGov is the clearest UK example, with syndicated retail measurement from firms such as NielsenIQ alongside. GWI sits nearby as an audience data platform that sells survey data collected once and reused, not fieldwork for your question.
- Platforms. Software is the product and service is a layer. Attest and Alchemic both sit here, with different answers to how much of the research a team runs for you.
The boundaries leak, since Kantar sells a platform and YouGov runs bespoke studies, but the tier still tells you who is accountable for the answer. The same split runs through the US market research firms guide; the UK version differs in its regulator, its trade body and its reach gaps.
How This Guide Evaluates UK Research Companies
Companies qualified if they serve UK consumer brands and publish enough about their method to compare.
Six criteria shaped the table:
- Tier and accountability: who owns the answer.
- Method range: qual, quant, sensory, neuro, or a mix.
- Channel: online only, or also phone, face to face, hall tests and messaging.
- Published scale: panel size, markets or benchmark depth, as stated.
- Service model: full service, self-serve, or both.
- Transparency: whether prices, accreditations or turnaround are published.
No company paid for inclusion. Alchemic publishes this page and takes slot 1 below; everywhere else the order is alphabetical.
Which UK Companies Serve Consumer Brands
1. Alchemic: Best for Reaching UK Consumers Beyond the Browser
Alchemic pairs an AI interview platform with a full-service research team, so a brand can run the study itself or hand over the brief. One interview carries qual and quant, giving a quote bank and a distribution chart from the same field.
The distinctive part is the channel. Respondents choose a web link, an interview inside WhatsApp with no link and no app, or an outbound AI phone call. Alchemic publishes 57+ languages including Hindi, Tamil and Telugu, which matters in UK categories where a first-language interview changes who takes part. Recruitment is managed fieldwork or bring your own across 14 markets including the USA and the UK, and a 200-interview qualitative study runs from brief to live dashboard in 3 days, 5 to 7 when complex.
Best for: UK shoppers a browser link under-reaches, or one study across the UK and other markets. Limitations: no UK normative database, no hall-test venues, and data hosted on AWS Mumbai, so confirm international transfer terms in the contract.
2. Attest: Best for Fast Self-Serve Quant With Interviews Alongside
Founded in East London in 2015, Attest now describes itself as a consumer insights engine for B2C brands. Its platform combines surveys with AI-moderated interviews and claims reach to 150M+ consumers across 59 markets.
Its pricing is unusual and useful: one flat audience fee with no premium for narrower audiences, sold as annual credits, with an in-house team of research, strategy and analytics specialists on hand.
Best for: teams running frequent quantitative checks who want to own the survey. Limitations: credits do not roll over after 12 months, and niche audiences can take longer to fill.
3. Brandspeak: Best for Senior-Led Brand Development Research
Brandspeak is a London research and brand consultancy with over 20 years of B2B and B2C work, including FMCG, retail and financial services. It covers brand development, tracking through its GrowthTrack approach, NPD, packaging and advertising research, in qualitative, quantitative and ethnographic forms.
Its clearest promise is staffing: every project is led by a director-level consultant, and international programs run through local partners with language expertise.
Best for: repositioning or tracking where senior interpretation matters more than panel scale. Limitations: fieldwork outside the UK depends on partners rather than its own teams.
4. Kantar: Best for Benchmarks Built Over Decades
Kantar's advantage is data few suppliers hold. Its brand equity study covers 4.3 million consumers, 21,000 brands and 54 markets, and its Blueprint for Brand Growth draws on 6.5 billion consumer data points. It sells custom research and creative testing, plus Kantar Marketplace for teams that want to run standardized products themselves, with UK work for Dulux, New Look and KitKat on its site.
Best for: results read against category norms, or a multi-country tracker with a long history. Limitations: the norms are the reason to pay, so a one-off exploratory study buys less of its advantage.
5. MMR Research: Best for Product, Pack and Sensory Testing
MMR Research started in a spare bedroom in Benson, Oxfordshire, and now calls itself the global consumer and sensory research agency, with over 30 years of work and a Wallingford head office. It joins sensory science to consumer research across product development, packaging, concepts and range optimization.
A brand reformulating a recipe needs exactly that: sensory measurement and consumer liking in one design.
Best for: FMCG product, reformulation and pack work where taste, texture or feel decides. Limitations: narrow by design, so a brand-strategy question with no product in it is not its core.
6. Savanta: Best for Tracking With a Data Product Behind It
Savanta describes itself as a data, market research and advisory company, with a London office. Alongside full fieldwork and analysis it runs data products: BrandVue for brand tracking, and Grocery Eye, a quarterly snapshot of UK consumers since 2014. A custom study can then be read against an ongoing market series from the same supplier.
Best for: custom work plus an always-on UK consumer read. Limitations: its breadth across financial services, public policy and B2B makes consumer work one practice among several.
7. Vision One: Best for a Full UK Method Range Under One Roof
Vision One is a London full-service agency with more than 25 years of history, ISO 20252 accreditation, and The Drum's Best Research Agency award in 2020 and 2021. Its method list is unusually complete: groups, depths, CATI, CAPI, online surveys, hall and central-location tests, eye tracking and implicit reaction-time testing.
It also publishes prices, which few UK agencies do, from £5,000 to £30,000 or more for good-quality research.
Best for: one agency across U&A, segmentation, concept, pack and pricing, including in-person tests. Limitations: published figures are starting points, and international work raises them.
8. Walnut Unlimited: Best for Behavioral Science and Neuro
Walnut Unlimited, part of Accenture Song, calls itself the human understanding agency, working from London and Winchester. It blends market research with behavioral science and consumer neuroscience to explain decisions people cannot easily articulate, and its Human Understanding Lab built LUCA, a suite of generative AI tools designed to support its researchers. Its site shows work with IGD on nudging healthier, more sustainable diets.
Best for: why shoppers act against their stated intentions. Limitations: a neuro or behavioral design is more than a simple preference question needs.
9. YouGov: Best for Daily Brand Tracking and Speed
YouGov's consumer offer rests on scale and speed. BrandIndex tracks brands daily across 16 core brand health metrics, Profiles describes audiences in depth, and YouGov Surveys offers a 24/7 self-serve survey platform on a panel of 30 million members. Its AI interviewer, BrandIndex Voices, runs short follow-up interviews with panel members, and bespoke qual and quant research sits alongside.
Best for: continuous competitor tracking and fast nationally representative reads. Limitations: a panel reaches people who joined a panel, so segments that do not join online panels need another route.
Who a UK Study Reaches, and Who It Misses
A panel-only UK study reaches people who are online, and not everyone is. Ofcom's Adults' Media Use and Attitudes 2026 report found 6% of UK adults have no internet access at home. Of that offline group, 66% are aged 75 or over and 81% live in C2DE households, and a further 20% of online adults rely solely on a smartphone.
The ONS put the UK population at 69.3 million in mid-2024, with the number aged 65 and over rising in all four nations. In grocery, household goods, health and value retail, a panel-only sample under-represents buyers a decision may hinge on.
Ofcom's Online Nation 2025 report shows WhatsApp reached 90% of UK online adults in May 2025, with 74% using it on an average day. An interview inside an app people open daily meets them where a survey link has to send them elsewhere.
For adults without home internet, most of them aged 75 or over, the phone remains the most direct route. Alchemic runs both WhatsApp-native interviews and outbound AI phone interviews, with consent captured on the first turn and every call recorded and searchable; face-to-face CAPI from an agency such as Vision One closes the same gap by other means. Ask every shortlisted company which UK adults its default method cannot reach. The wider options are in reaching respondents without smartphones.
What Drives the Cost of a UK Consumer Study
Few UK agencies publish prices. Vision One's guide is the most detailed public example: a consumer focus group from around £4,000, roughly £1,000 more in person than online, and consumer brand tracking from about £5,000 per wave.
Five things move any UK quote:
- Incidence: how many people must be screened to find one who qualifies.
- Mode: groups, hall tests and CAPI carry venue, travel and interviewer costs online work avoids.
- Sample definition: nationally representative is cheapest per head; category buyers and older offline adults cost more.
- Scope: fieldwork only, or design, analysis and a recommendation.
- Markets: each added country brings translation, local recruitment and reporting.
Models differ too. Attest sells a flat audience fee on annual credits, agencies quote per study, and trackers run on subscription. Alchemic publishes no price and quotes per study. The trade-offs are set out in market research costs and pricing models.
When Another Company Is the Better Choice
Several companies here beat a platform with a research team on their home ground.
- Daily competitor tracking with years of history: YouGov's BrandIndex. A study-by-study approach does not replace a continuous series.
- Results read against category norms: Kantar, whose equity and creative norms a newer supplier cannot match.
- Taste, texture and reformulation: MMR Research, or Vision One's hall tests. Product in the hand, in a controlled venue, is the right design for sensory work.
- Behavioral and neuro explanations: Walnut Unlimited, when the question is why people act against what they say.
- An audience profile from existing data: GWI's syndicated survey data answers who an audience is without new fieldwork.
- Cheap, frequent quant a team runs itself: Attest or YouGov Surveys.
The case for a platform with a research team is narrower: UK consumers a browser link under-reaches, one study across the UK and other markets, or qual depth at quant scale in days. For grocery and FMCG, the CPG market research companies guide adds retail measurement and in-store specialists.
Where UK Research Lists Mislead
Several of the most visible "top UK market research companies" pages are written by a company on the list, which ranks itself first; this guide does the same with Alchemic, and says so. Review directories such as Clutch show which firms collected reviews, a different thing from which firms fit your brief. Revenue rankings favor global groups: MRS reports the top 100 UK research businesses turned over £5.44 billion in 2024.
A Shortlist Checklist for UK Consumer Brands
- MRS accreditation. The MRS Code of Conduct, revised in May 2023, applies to Accredited Company Partners and those they retain, so a subcontracted recruiter is bound too.
- Research, not marketing. The ICO states that contacting people for genuine market research is not direct marketing, but research messages carrying promotional material, or research done to target people with marketing later, are. Ask how the supplier keeps your study on the right side of that line.
- Reach and sourcing. Ask who the default method excludes and where respondents come from, using the questions to put to any vendor about respondent reach.
- Scope in writing. Confirm whether the quote covers design, analysis and a recommendation, or fieldwork alone.
- Data location. Under UK GDPR, ask where data is stored and on what transfer terms if outside the UK.
Where AI-Moderated Research Falls Short
- Sensory work. A taste test needs product in the mouth under controlled conditions, which a remote interview cannot supply.
- Offline respondents on messaging channels. A WhatsApp interview reaches only WhatsApp users, and the older adults in Ofcom's offline group are the least likely to be among them; a phone or face-to-face interview reaches them instead.
- Mode signals. Text and voice interviews carry no facial signal; video modes, including Alchemic's, read expression only when the respondent is on camera.
- Distress. No system has been validated as a distress detector, so none should be relied on to notice a respondent in difficulty.
- Norms. A new study has no historical benchmark, and when the decision rests on beating a category norm, the supplier holding the norm wins.
Once it has the client's brief, Alchemic designs and tailors the discussion guide to handle these risks before fielding, rather than leaving that work to the buyer.
