Name shortlists tested in 60+ languages, with USA and UK fieldwork

Brand Name Testing for US Brand and Product Teams

When the launch date is set and four names are still on the shortlist, US brand and product teams need evidence before one gets locked in. Alchemic runs brand name testing with an AI interviewer that asks hundreds of your buyers what each name suggests, by web, phone or WhatsApp. We run shortlist screening, product name testing and multi-market language checks, so you get a ranked shortlist, the reasons behind each rank and recordings of how people say each name.

Our Brand Name Testing Services

Each service below tests names your in-house team or naming partner has already shortlisted, on one engine: a human-briefed AI interviewer that talks to hundreds of buyers at once by web, phone or WhatsApp.

Shortlist Name Screening

Show three to six names in one study, each on its own card, in monadic or sequential monadic order. The AI asks what every name suggests and why it earned its rating; 100 to 200 interviews typically give stable themes.

Names Going Into Several Markets

A name that reads well in English can carry a different meaning in Spanish, Arabic or Hindi. Respondents react in their own language across 60+ languages, so a wrong association surfaces before launch rather than after the packaging ships.

Product Name Testing and Brand Fit

Product name testing checks whether a new name fits your master brand or pulls against it. Interviews probe what each candidate borrows from the parent, using the Aaker and Keller frameworks behind Alchemic's 7 to 10 day brand equity waves.

Perception of Each Candidate

Rate each name on fit, distinctiveness, ease of saying and memorability, then hear why. Every rating links to the respondent and the verbatim quote, so a 3 out of 5 arrives with the objection that produced it.

Brand Naming Research in Context

Brand naming research works best inside the wider branding question of who the brand serves and what it should stand for. Our branding research guide covers that ground, and every Alchemic theme is cited to a verbatim across 60+ languages.

Personas Who Will Hear the Name

Test the name with the buyers who will actually say it. Persona studies of 60 to 300 interviews define those segments first, then the name test cuts results by each one, at 50 to 80 respondents per sub-group.

Our 5-Step Naming Research Process

Bring the shortlist

Share the three to six names your team or naming partner has shortlisted, the product they will sit on and the US buyers whose reaction matters. Our researchers brief the AI interviewer on your category and brand vocabulary, and it drafts a discussion guide you can edit line by line.

Set the design and sample

Choose monadic, where each respondent sees one name, or sequential monadic, where each sees every name in rotated order. Recruit through managed fieldwork, bring your own customer list, or mix both. The study builder is live within 48 hours of the brief.

Hear each name in conversation

The AI shows each name on its own card and asks what it suggests before any rating, then asks why a name earned a 3 and not a 4. On a call or a voice note respondents say the name aloud, so mispronunciation and sound-alike confusion show up early.

Code associations as they arrive

Every interview auto-codes into themes such as fit, meaning, sound, memorability and unwanted associations, and the dashboard is live before fieldwork closes. Later in the conversation the AI asks which names the respondent still remembers without showing the list again, so recall is unaided.

Choose the name with evidence

Your US team ranks the shortlist by appeal and fit, drills from any score to the respondent and the voice clip, and cuts results by segment or market. Alchemic's stated standard for a single-market study is 200+ interviews and a theme-coded report within 5 days.

A Preference Score or the Reason Behind It

A quick name poll tells you which candidate people pick, and a brand name testing survey with a large sample gives you scores you can trend across launches. If you need each name scored against normative benchmarks from a syndicated database, the established survey vendors serve that well, and many teams run both. Alchemic's version is the conversation behind the score: each name shown on its own, what it suggests probed before the rating, how it is pronounced heard on a call or voice note, and every theme traced to the respondent. Choose by the output your naming decision needs.

Why Alchemic

Why Choose Alchemic for Brand Name Testing?

Meaning before preference

The AI asks what a name suggests before asking whether people like it. A name that scores well but signals the wrong category is caught in the first minute of the interview.

US fieldwork on the record

Alchemic has fielded studies in the United States and the UK among 14 markets, so a US launch team gets its shortlist tested with American buyers by researchers who have run US fieldwork before.

Hears how the name is said

On a phone call or a WhatsApp voice note, respondents say the name aloud. Stumbles, mispronunciations and sound-alike confusion with other brands are transcribed, coded and linked to the clip you can play.

Ratings and reasons together

Each respondent rates every name and explains the rating in the same conversation, so the ranked shortlist and the quote bank come from one field. No second study is needed to explain the scores.

About Alchemic

An AI-native research company for brand and product teams that need to hear from buyers at scale, built by researchers.

Alchemic is a founder-led, AI-native research company focused on end-to-end consumer research at scale, with studies fielded in 14 markets including the United States and the United Kingdom. Its human-briefed AI interviewer talks to people by web and phone in 60+ languages including English, Spanish, French, Arabic and Hindi, and on WhatsApp by text or voice note, hundreds at a time. Alchemic has run 50,000+ interviews, and its clients include Unilever, Mars, CaratLane, Razorpay and Blackberrys. Its studies span concept, packaging, brand equity and ad research. Name testing runs on the concept testing method: each candidate shown on its own, probed until the reason behind a rating is clear, and coded into themes while fieldwork is still running. For a US brand team, that means a naming decision backed by hundreds of conversations rather than a single poll. Studies are quoted per project, with no per-seat fees.

Brand Name Testing FAQ

What is brand name testing?

Brand name testing is market research that shows a shortlist of candidate names to the people who will buy the product and measures how each one lands: what it suggests, whether it fits the category, how easily it is said and remembered, and which associations it carries. The result is a ranked shortlist with the reasons behind each rank.

What does brand name testing measure?

Most brand name testing measures five things: fit with the product and category, distinctiveness from names already on the shelf, ease of pronunciation and spelling, memorability, and the associations a name triggers, including unwanted ones. Alchemic adds the reason behind each rating, so a low fit score arrives with the specific meaning respondents took from the name.

How many respondents does brand name testing need?

Alchemic's stated guide for concept-style tests applies: 100 to 200 interviews for a single-cell test with a broad target, 200 to 400 in total across cells when each respondent sees one name, and 50 to 80 per sub-group when you need cuts by segment or market. Three to six names per study keeps feedback sharp before fatigue sets in.

Should brand name testing be monadic or sequential monadic?

Monadic, where each respondent sees one name, gives the cleanest absolute scores because no name is judged against another. Sequential monadic, where each respondent sees every name in rotated order, is efficient for ranking a shortlist head to head but can carry reactions over. Alchemic supports both, so you can screen the shortlist sequentially and then confirm the finalist monadically.

How long does brand name testing take?

For a standard 200-interview single-market study, Alchemic's stated timeline is a brief on day 1, the study builder live within 48 hours and a theme-coded report within 5 days. Multi-market or large-sample tests typically add 2 to 3 days. Interviews run in parallel, so hundreds of conversations do not queue behind one moderator.

What is the difference between naming research and brand name testing?

Naming research covers the whole naming process: positioning, generating candidates, linguistic and trademark screening, and consumer testing. Brand name testing is the consumer step, where a shortlist meets real buyers. Alchemic runs that step on the names your in-house team or naming partner has created, and can extend it into positioning and persona research.

Can you test a brand name in several languages?

Yes. Web and phone interviews run in 60+ languages including Spanish, French, Arabic, Mandarin and Hindi, and respondents can also answer on WhatsApp by text or voice note. Each person reacts to the name in their own language, so a meaning or sound that misfires in one market surfaces before launch rather than after it.

What drives the cost of brand name testing?

Four things set the price: how many names you test, how many interviews and cells the design needs, how many markets and languages it spans, and whether respondents come from managed fieldwork or your own customer list. Alchemic quotes a fixed price per study with no per-seat fees, and testing on your own list costs less than panel recruitment.
