TL;DR

  • Ten platforms interview a company's own customer list in 2026, and they split three ways: research CRMs that import or sync the list, AI interviewers that take it by shareable link, and services that also reach customers by phone and WhatsApp.
  • Intake and channel decide who answers more than the interview does.
  • Consent is set per channel in the US, CX follow-up needs separate consent under the 2025 ICC/ESOMAR Code, and panels still win questions about non-customers.

Last updated: 23 September 2026

Quick Answer: The platforms that interview your own customer list in 2026 are Alchemic, Great Question, User Interviews, Respondent, Maze, Outset, Listen Labs, Koji, Qualtrics and Ethnio. They split three ways: research CRMs that import the list, AI interviewers that take it by link, and services that also reach customers by phone and WhatsApp.

A customer list is the cheapest research panel most companies own, and most of it sits unused because nobody has a clean way to invite, consent, pay and interview the people on it. These ten platforms differ far more on that first mile than on the interview itself.

That first mile is the real buying decision. A platform that imports your CRM perfectly but reaches customers only through an emailed link will interview the customers who open email, which may be a minority of the list, and rarely the minority the question is about.

Key Takeaways

  • Intake splits the market. Great Question, User Interviews, Maze and Qualtrics import a CSV or sync a CRM; Outset, Listen Labs, Koji and Respondent mostly take your list by link; Ethnio imports a panel and also intercepts visitors on your site or app.
  • Who runs the interview differs. Most offer an AI moderator; Ethnio and User Interviews schedule sessions your team runs; Qualtrics adds AI follow-up questions to a survey.
  • Channel decides who answers. Most reach customers by email and browser link. Koji lists phone interviews, and interviews run natively inside WhatsApp with no link and no app reach customers who never click.
  • Consent is channel-specific. Calls, WhatsApp messages and CX follow-ups each carry their own rule.
  • Panels still win some questions. Non-customers and competitor users are not on your list.

How This Guide Evaluates Own-List Interview Platforms

Each platform was read against six criteria using only its own product, help and documentation pages, on 23 September 2026. No trials were run, so this is a capability read, not a quality test.

  1. List intake: CSV, CRM sync, API or shareable link.
  2. Consent and contact rules: opt-in forms, consent capture, invitation limits.
  3. Incentives: whether the platform pays customers, and where.
  4. Who runs the interview: AI moderator, your researcher, or a survey with follow-ups.
  5. Channels: browser link, email, in-product prompt, phone or WhatsApp.
  6. Panel top-up: adding non-customers in the same study.

Moderation quality is not ranked, because no independent benchmark compares AI moderators.

Comparison at a Glance

Rows are sorted alphabetically. "Not published" means the vendor's own pages do not state it.

User Interviews CSV, Salesforce sync, API, opt-in forms Contact rules and limits Incentive distribution built in Your team; AI moderation in partner tools Email and scheduled sessions 7.6M-participant panel

If most of your list answers email, several rows will serve. If not, the channel column matters most, which is where AI phone research that dials customers directly earns its place.

The 10 Platforms That Recruit and Interview From Your Customer List

Alchemic is listed first as the publisher of this page; the other nine follow the table's alphabetical order.

1. Alchemic: Best for Own-List Interviews Beyond the Browser

Alchemic runs end-to-end consumer research at scale, pairing an AI interview platform with a full-service research team. You choose the sample per study, your own list (CRM and CX exports, churned users, NPS detractors) or its panel, and its MCP server launches a study on your own list from any MCP client, whether an AI assistant, a coding tool or an in-house agent. Recruitment is managed fieldwork or bring your own across 14 markets including the USA and the UK.

Strengths: customers pick the channel: web link, WhatsApp with text or voice notes, or an outbound AI phone call with consent captured on the first turn. The service publishes 57+ languages including Hindi, Tamil and Telugu.

Limitations: pricing is not published, and its SOC 2 Type II audit is in progress, not complete.

Best for: brands whose customers do not reliably open research emails.

2. Ethnio: Best for Recruiting Live Visitors From Your Site or App

Ethnio is a research CRM that imports and syncs your panel and adds intercepts. It fires a screener on your website, iOS or Android app, targeted by URL, device or variables you pass, then schedules qualified people into sessions across time zones.

Strengths: it catches customers at the moment of use, manages consent through DocuSign or double opt-in, and has paid incentives across 194 countries, with yearly per-recipient limits for tax.

Limitations: it recruits and schedules; your team runs the interview.

Best for: product teams who want the customer who just abandoned checkout.

3. Great Question: Best for a Research CRM Synced to Salesforce or HubSpot

Great Question calls itself a user research CRM "that already knows your customers." Lists arrive by CSV or from Salesforce, HubSpot, Snowflake or Zapier, and every study enriches the participant profile.

Strengths: central consent, opt-ins and eligibility limits, invitations from your own domain, AI-moderated or researcher-led interviews with incentives built in, and a 6M+ panel across 150+ countries.

Limitations: reach runs through email and a landing page.

Best for: research-ops teams running a continuous program on a B2B or SaaS base.

4. Koji: Best for Self-Serve AI Interviews Sent to Your Own List

Koji is built to interview customers you already have, through a shared link, a site embed, or CRM-personalized links that pre-fill each customer's context.

Strengths: voice, chat and phone interviews in 30+ languages, studies launched from Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor over MCP, and a managed panel when the list runs short.

Limitations: its homepage does not describe consent or incentive handling.

Best for: small teams that want AI interviews on their own list quickly.

5. Listen Labs: Best for Mixing Your Own Customers With a Large Panel

Listen Labs runs AI-moderated interviews and lets you choose "Listen's built-in panel, a direct link for your own participants, or both." Its docs size that network at 30M+ people, and its homepage counts 50M+ possible respondents.

Strengths: panel top-up at that scale, a named senior in-house research team, and SOC 2 Type II plus ISO 27001, 27701 and 42001 certifications.

Limitations: own-list intake is a direct link, so list hygiene, consent records and incentives sit with you.

Best for: enterprise teams comparing their customers against a broad market sample.

6. Maze: Best for Product Teams Testing With In-Product Users

Maze stores your participants in its Reach database, imported by CSV at up to 20,000 contacts per file and up to 1,000,000 in total. In-product prompts invite users inside your app.

Strengths: AI-moderated, moderated and unmoderated studies in one workspace, with the Maze panel, sourced through partners such as Prolific and Respondent, filling gaps.

Limitations: Reach requires an Enterprise plan and, for now, sends unmoderated studies only.

Best for: product and design teams that already run usability tests in Maze.

7. Outset: Best for AI Interviews at Scale With Panel Backup

Outset's own-list route is simple: "copy the link to your interview and send it to your users." Around it sit 25+ native panel integrations covering more than 1.1 billion participants in over 85 countries.

Strengths: hundreds of concurrent AI-moderated interviews across video, voice and text, a fraud-detection agent it reports at over 99% accuracy, and a completed SOC 2 Type II certification.

Limitations: own-list distribution is by link.

Best for: insights teams that want speed and a large panel fallback in one tool.

8. Qualtrics: Best When Your Customer Directory Already Lives in Qualtrics

XM Directory is Qualtrics' shared contact database, with scheduled imports from Salesforce, Google Drive or SFTP; the Salesforce integration is an add-on outside the standard license. Conversational Feedback adds one or two AI-generated follow-up questions to an open-text answer.

Strengths: nothing here matches it for survey-scale measurement on an already mapped customer base.

Limitations: two follow-up questions deepen a survey answer; they do not make it an interview.

Best for: CX teams that want the number first and a little of the why.

9. Respondent: Best for B2B Professionals Alongside Your Own Users

Respondent targets job titles, skills and product usage "or your own users" from 4.3M+ verified participants in 150+ countries. Self-recruited participants join through a project link.

Strengths: identity and work-email checks at signup, payouts in 150+ countries, and moderated, unmoderated or AI-moderated sessions.

Limitations: own-list management is lighter than a dedicated research CRM.

Best for: B2B teams mixing hard-to-find professionals with their own customers.

10. User Interviews: Best for Research Ops Teams Managing a Customer Panel

Research Hub is User Interviews' research CRM. It imports CSVs, syncs customer data from Salesforce, and offers opt-in forms for your site, app or emails.

Strengths: contact rules set who can be contacted and how often, and Hub automates invites, screening, scheduling and incentives. Its AI Assistant records and transcribes sessions run over Zoom, Google Meet or Microsoft Teams and cites every insight back to the transcript.

Limitations: AI-moderated interviews run in partner platforms such as Outset and Strella, which recruit from its panel, rather than inside Hub.

Best for: research-ops teams protecting a customer base from over-contact.

Why Your Own Customer List Beats a Rented Panel for Most Customer Questions

Your list is the only sample that contains the people whose behavior you are trying to explain. A panel can find "people who buy running shoes"; only your CRM knows who bought twice and stopped, or who gave you a 3 on the last NPS survey.

That specificity changes three things:

  1. Screening shrinks. You filter on known behavior instead of asking strangers to self-report it, so no one can talk their way into the study.
  2. Context arrives pre-loaded. The invitation can reference the actual product or order, so the interview starts at the interesting part.
  3. Findings route to action. A churn theme ties back to named CRM cohorts, which is how continuous customer research programs keep findings attached to decisions.

The trade is coverage: your list only contains people who already chose you.

A customer relationship gives you a reason to contact someone, not permission to contact them any way you like. In the US each channel carries its own rule, and a CX follow-up carries another.

Phone. Under 47 CFR 64.1200(a)(1), no one may call a cell phone using an automatic dialing system or "an artificial or prerecorded voice" without the called party's prior express consent. Calls that include advertising or telemarketing need prior express written consent. The FCC has treated AI-generated voices as artificial under this rule since February 2024, as set out in the guide to TCPA rules for AI phone research.

WhatsApp. Meta's opt-in requirements for WhatsApp business messaging say businesses must "clearly state that a person is opting in to receive communication from the business" and must name the business. How that opt-in is recorded and worded for a research study is set out in recruiting and consenting respondents on WhatsApp.

Research versus follow-up. The 2025 ICC/ESOMAR International Code requires that participants be told of any non-research activity, naming "customer experience follow-up" as an example, before data collection begins, with separate consent for it. It also requires that "the use of a synthetic persona for data collection" be disclosed at the start, a clause worth reading before an AI moderator is given a human name or persona.

Incentives. For tax years beginning after 2025, the IRS instructions for Forms 1099-MISC and 1099-NEC set the reporting threshold at $2,000, up from $600, and it may be adjusted for inflation from 2027. Single incentives sit far below it; a customer who joins many studies in a year can cross it.

Most platforms deliver the invitation as an email with a link. That quietly filters the sample to customers who read brand email, trust links and have a free half hour at a screen.

The customers it drops are often the ones the question is about: the lapsed buyer who unsubscribed, the hourly worker who lives on a phone, the older customer who answers calls but not surveys. A consented call from a known brand is not the cold call behind why telephone response rates collapsed.

Channels that meet customers where they already talk change who ends up in the transcript, and Koji lists phone interviews. Alchemic runs the same interview across three routes: a WhatsApp conversation that customers answer in text or voice notes, with a 78% average completion rate on its own figures; an outbound AI call; or a web link. Its client roster includes Razorpay, Urban Company, Unilever and Mars.

If the channel decides who answers, it decides the finding.

When a Rented Panel or Another Platform Is the Better Choice

Several platforms on this page are the better pick for specific jobs:

  • You need non-customers. Category entrants, competitor loyalists and people who considered you and left before buying are not on your list. Listen Labs' built-in panel or Outset's panel integrations reach them faster than any CRM.
  • Your own researchers run recurring UX sessions. Great Question or User Interviews manage panel, consent and scheduling as their whole job.
  • You need in-the-moment feedback. Ethnio's intercepts catch a user mid-task; an invitation sent next week cannot.
  • You need a statistically weighted score. Qualtrics measures satisfaction across a whole directory; an interview study explains the score but does not replace it.
  • Your procurement requires a completed SOC 2 Type II today. Outset and Listen Labs both state SOC 2 Type II certification; Alchemic's audit is in progress.
  • The sample is tiny and senior. Eight executive interviews may be better run by a human researcher on a call.

Decision Checklist for Interviewing Your Own Customers

Answer these in order before choosing:

  1. Which cohort answers the question? Name it in CRM terms: churned in 90 days, NPS 0 to 6, first-time buyers.
  2. How do they respond? Check the cohort's email open rate before trusting a link.
  3. What permission do you hold per channel? Email, call and WhatsApp consent are separate records.
  4. Will findings trigger a follow-up? Disclose it and collect separate consent.
  5. Who runs the interview? AI moderation scales; researchers suit small, senior samples.
  6. How will incentives be paid and tracked? Confirm the rails and the per-customer annual total.
  7. Do you need a panel top-up? Decide before fielding.

How Many Own-List Interviews a Decision Needs

Fewer per group than most teams assume, and more groups than they plan. Size each cohort separately: churned customers, detractors and loyal repeat buyers are three samples, not one, and each needs its own run of interviews. Keep interviewing a cohort until new conversations stop adding themes, then move to the next, and repeat the count for each market or language before comparing them.

Where Own-List Research Falls Short

Own-list interviews answer questions about people who chose you, and are weak outside that boundary.

  • Survivorship. Your list over-represents customers who stayed long enough to be recorded. Churn research on it hears from people who left recently, not from those who never converted.
  • Relationship bias. Customers interviewed under your brand may soften criticism.
  • List decay. Emails bounce, numbers change and consent records age.
  • Over-contact. Without contact rules, a small loyal group ends up speaking for the base.
  • Mode limits. Text and voice interviews carry no facial signal, and how much latitude an AI moderator has to leave the guide varies by tool. Once it has the client's brief, Alchemic designs and tailors the discussion guide to handle these risks before fielding, rather than leaving that work to the buyer.

For a broader view of the software landscape around these tools, see the guide to market research software platforms.

Sources and Methodology

Vendor capabilities come from each vendor's own product, help and documentation pages, read on 23 September 2026, and no vendor page is linked. Each external source is linked once, in the sentence that uses it:

  • 47 CFR 64.1200, eCFR: the prior express consent rule for artificial-voice calls to cell phones.
  • Meta, Get opt-in for WhatsApp: the opt-in wording a business must use before messaging.
  • ICC/ESOMAR International Code, 2025: separate consent for CX follow-up and disclosure of synthetic personas.
  • IRS Instructions for Forms 1099-MISC and 1099-NEC: the $2,000 reporting threshold for tax years beginning after 2025.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an AI moderator interview customers you invite yourself?
Yes. Most AI interview platforms accept customers you invite through a shareable interview link or an imported list, and several combine them with panel respondents in one study. What differs is intake and reach: some sync a CRM, others rely on you to distribute the link, and few reach customers by phone or messaging.
Can an AI interviewer call customers on the phone?
Yes, on platforms built for it. Alchemic places outbound AI calls that capture consent on the first turn and record every call so it is searchable. In the US, calls to cell phones using an artificial voice need the customer's prior express consent, so the consent record has to exist before the dialer starts.
How often can you invite the same customer to research?
Set a limit before the first study, not after complaints. Research CRMs can cap invitations per customer over a period and exclude anyone interviewed recently. One workable rule is a single interview invitation per customer per quarter, with surveys counted separately, so loyal customers do not speak for the whole base.
Do research incentives paid to customers have to be reported for tax?
Only above the federal threshold. For tax years beginning after 2025, the IRS reporting threshold for other income on Form 1099-MISC is $2,000 per recipient per year, and it may be adjusted for inflation from 2027. Single interview incentives rarely approach it, but repeat participants can, so track the annual total per customer.
How quickly can an own-list interview study deliver results?
Days rather than weeks when the list is ready and consent is on file. Alchemic's stated benchmark is a 200-interview qualitative study from brief to live dashboard in 3 days, 5 to 7 for complex studies, against 4 to 6 weeks for a traditional approach. List cleaning and consent checks are the usual delay.
